BOXING
TO-NIGHT’S CONTEST Arrangements have been completed for the professional contest to be held to-night between George Allan (middle-weight champion of New Zealand) and Cliff Hanham (Waimate). Although to-night’s contest is not for the middle-weight title, much depends on Hanham’s display as to whether he will be considered a logical contender for the title at present held by Allan. The New Zealand Boxing Council advised the local association yesterday that Mr A. H. Curtayne, ex-chairman of the Wellington Boxing Association, had been appointed to represent the controlling body at the contest. Opinion as to the result of tonight’s conest is evenly divided. Spectators at the bout between Allan and Stan Jenkins consider the former to be the equal of any boxer that has performed in Oamaru. That the South Canterbury representative is also highly thought of is evident by the large number of spectators who are coming from Oamaru. A pleasing feature is the interest being taken in the bout by residents of Waimate and the Mackenzie County. Both contestants will reach Timaru this afternoon and will be officially weighed at 5 o’clock. The theatre doors will be opened at 7.15 and the tournament will commence at 8 p.m.
