BOXING

THURSDAY NIGHT’S CONTEST The meeting of George Allan (Gisborne) and Cliff Hanham (Waimate) on Thursday night is creating widespread interest. The middleweight champion has won great popularity in Oamaru and has delighted large attendances at the Waitaki Boys’ High School and St. Kevin’s College in his exhibition performances with North Otago amateurs. Mr Summers has informed the local association that Allan will do all his training at Oamaru, and will arrive in Timaru on the morning of the contest. According to T. Thompson, former Australian professional boxer, now well-known in business circles in Oamaru, the Gisborne boxer is the most correct hitter that he has seen since coming to New Zealand. The manner in which he disposed of Jenkins in the title bout by clean and well timed punching would have done credit to any champion. As South Canterbury followers of the sport know, Hanham leaves nothing to be desired when it comes to clean hitting. Like his opponent the local boxer favours long range fighting, so the coming contest should be open and devoid of clinching which greatly mars many fights among the big men. An interesting feature of the coming contest is that Johnny Summers has asked that Hanham be placed under a £lO forfeit should his weight exceed list 61b. Apparently no chances are being taken with Hanham, for if successful in Thursday night’s contest his challenge for a title bout will be approved by the New Zealand Boxing Council. Hanham has agreed to the weight stipulation and, according to his trainer, W. O'Connor, will have no difficulty in making it. The articles covering the contest stipulate that Hanham must weigh in at 5 p.m. on the day of the contest. Applications for special reserves have been received from Oamaru and V.’ ’ nate and have been granted by the local association. Reserves will open to-day.
