Whitcombe, with an aggregate of 295 for 72 holes, won the British open golf championship at Sandwich. A fierce south-westerly gale incommoded the competitors’ tent and show stands, causing great damage. Only nine of the 37 players in the final rounds managed to do better than 80. In the third round, at the end Whitcombe led by a stroke from Burton, ■with Adams a further stroke behind. Cotton, last year’s champion, was at this stage seven strokes behind the leader, but after going out in 35 in the final round, he needed 3-4-4 at the last three holes to tie. However, he was twice bunkered at the 17th, taking six. The following are the scores for the final two rounds together with the aggregate for the four championship rounds.
