PORT OF TIMARU

LATEST ADVICES There were no arrivals or departures during the week-end, the Port Hardy being the only vessel in port. She is to load to-day for London and will sail this evening for New Plymouth to continue loading. The Holmdale is the only coastal vessel expected to-day. She is due to-night from Oamaru to load for Wellington, Picton and Wanganui, and should sail later for Lyttelton. VESSEL IN PORT No. 1 wharf—Port Hardy, m.v. She is due from Dunedin i and should proceed via Lyttelton the same night. The Holmglen should be here from Dunedin to load for Wellington, New Plymouth and Waikato on Wednesday.

The Waipiata is listed to load for Wellington and Auckland at Timaru on Wednesday. She is expected from Bluff, and is to sail the same evening for Lyttelton. The Waipahi should be here on Wednesday for Wellington, Nelson and New Plymouth loading. She is scheduled to arrive from Bluff, via Oamaru, and is to depart that night for Lyttelton.

A Long Voyage The British steamer Eastmoor has had a run of bad luck lately. The ship is now nearly 200 Fays out from Galveston with a cargo of sulphur for Fremantle. She spent six weeks in Pernambuco with boiler trouble, then came to Durban, was dry docked with all her cargo on board, spent some time in having her boilers repaired, and then set off on her way to Australia. When four days out the boilers gave trouble again, so she returned to Durban, where she remained until June 13, when she left for Fremantle. Empire Star Home The Blue Line has had advice that the Empire Star, which left Auckland on May 31, reached London on July 3. Eastern Transhipments The Taiping arrived at Sydney from Hongkong on July G. and transhipments will arrive here by the Karetu, which is to load at Sydney on Wednesday. The Karetu should also carry transhipments from the Sydney Maru from Japan. Beauty Treatment

It cannot often be said that so large a group of Atlantic liners has entered the beauty parlour, but this is precisely what has happened at Liverpool and London, where the Cunard White Star Canadian Service “A” liners are undergoing extensive treatment at the hands of artists, decorators, and other beauty specialists, says the “Crow’s Nest.”

Normally, during their winter lay-up, Atlantic liners receive their annual overhaul, but on this occasion very much more than the usual springcleaning is taking place. It is. in fact, the gigantic task of modernising the l pasfenger accommodation in these i liners which is now engaging the attention of hundreds of craftsmen in a score of trades. As a result of their handiwork, beautifully furnished new suites with private bathrooms are appearing where formerly ordinary two and four-berth rooms existed. Spaciousness and brighter colourings are the keynotes. Staterooms are being enlarged and additional lighting introduced. New colour schemes supplant the white effect which previously figured so largely in ship decoration. A modem system of hot and cold water supply and up-to-date heating and ventilating arrangements under control of the passengers form part of the scheme and involve the laying of miles of new piping and wiring. The dining rooms, lounges, and smoking rooms are also taking on a more modem appearance as a result of brighter colourings, revised lighting, and new furnishings. Literally thousands of yards of carpeting and cur-j

tains have been required to effect the J transformation. | / Particularly do the new arrangements i 1 illustrate the amenities now available I to passengers travelling third class,, J larger cabins with an abundance of I t rooms for two, modern lighting, - chromium toilet fitments, and service | bells being among these.
