There seems to be a growing need to widen the sphere of Adult Education in this district, and a public meeting is called for to-morrow night in the Municipal Chambers to send recommendations to the Adult Educational Council from South Canterbury. The popular weekly dance will be held in the Bay Tea Rooms next Saturday night. Hec Macdonald and his swing band will supply the music. To-morrow a jumble sale will be held in the Wentworth Hall for Y.W.C.A. funds. To-morrow in their Mart commencing at 2 p.m. Morton and Co.. Ltd. will sell all the blankets, linen, skin rugs, etc., on account of the estate of the late Miss A. E. Pigeon. This day at 1.30 at the Wentworth Auction Mart, Runciman Pryor, Ltd. will hold an auction sale of superior household furniture and effects, on account of Mrs White, including chesterfield, china cabinet, Singer machine, carpets, etc. The Labour social weekty dance to be held to-night in the Wentworth Hall will include a novelty dance and a quick luncheon dance. Between March. 1937, and February, 1938, rental cars were involved in 55 accidents, stated a report presented io the Road Safety Council last week. This represented one accident for every 12 rental cars on the road, compared with one in every 81 private cars. In 34 of the 55 accidents the rental car drivers were adjudged solely to blame, and in nine others the rental cars were partly to blame. Of the 43 accidents where the rental car drivers were at fault. 10 of the drivers were under 21 years of age and 22 were under 27 years of age. Nine of tiie drivers involved in the 55 accidents were unlicensed. The number of cars used for rental purposes had increased from 147 in 1933 to 680 in 1937. and they were still increasing.
