NO REASON FOR COMPLACENCY By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, March 9 Speaking last evening on health in relation to town-pianni.ng to members and association of the New Zealand branch of the Royal Sanitary Institute, now in conference, Mr J, M. Mawson, Government Town-Planning Officer, at Wellington, pointed out that New Zealand’s statistics gave no reason for complacency. “There are,” he said, “1435 medical practitioners registered in New Zealand. or one to every 1096 persons—the highest ratio in the world. I believe that ir. the last full year for which statistics are available there were 101,021 in-patients in public hospitals, equal to 6.4 per cent, of the population, and 118,256 out-patients, equal to 7.5 per cent, of population a total of 13.9 per cent., excluding the numbers cared for in private hospitals. The total cost of administration of public hospitals for 1936, excluding charitable aid, was £1,341,000. “During the same year the total number of mental patients under oversight, care or control was 9227, of whom 7860 were housed In mental institutions at a cost of £524,310.
