BOW STOVE IN

DREDGE SINKS IN THREE MINUTES By Telegraph —Press Association GREYMOUTH, March 9. The Stafford gold dredge, operating about eight miles north of Hokitika, sank in 20 feet of water in three minutes early this evening. Although the actual cause has not yet been defined, it is believed that the starboard bow came in contact with a submerged log and was stove in. The three men on shift, S. de Fillipi, W. Routham and J. Routham were forced to make a hurried escape by the gangway. The dredge is lying on its side in the dam, and the job of refloating it will mean the emptying of the dam. The dredge is owned and operated by an Australian company and for the last four years has been producing excellent returns. It is one of the smaller type of electrically operated dredges on the coast. Fourteen employees are affected.
