REBEL LOSSES AT TERUEL

IMPORTANT SURRENDERS REVEALED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph -Copyright MADRID, January 9. With the surrender of the Santa Clara Convent, the Spanish Government claims to have received the submission of 2000 combatants and 2000 civilians. Refugees told pitiful stories of their 27 days’ ordeal since the beginning of the Government offensive. One prisoner said he had only two sardines, a little bread and hardly any water daily during the past five days. Two hundred officers and non-com-missioned officers are being held for trial, but the remainder of the prisoners have been sent to Valencia. Another message states that the Insurgents, undaunted by the surrender of their supporters inside the city, are still attacking Teruel from the north. A message from Hendaye reports that the Insurgents carried out an air raid on Barcelona and its suburbs. Twenty persons were killed.

Genera] de Llano, spokesman for the rebel leaders, broadcast a violent attack on the insurgent commander, Colonel Reydancourt, who surrendered at Teruel. “It cannot be denied that the Reds had a small success, thanks to the treason of an unworthy scoundrel who gave up the command of his troops at Teruel.’’ said General de Llano. “This criminal surrendered without consulting his superior, and committed one of the greatest of military crimes. There will be paid for, because God is just, and will have him assassinated by the Reds, or shot by a firing squad.” Most embarrassing of all Generalissimo Francisco Franco’s followers is the famed “Radio General,” hoarsevoiced, bibulous General Gonzalo Queipo de Llano y Sierra, commander of the Rightist southern armies. Once such an ardent Republican that he was exiled by Alfonso XIII, Queipo de Llano quickly turned to Fascism, and was an active leader in the civil war when Franco w r as still in Morocco.

A violent self-advertiser, Queipo de Llano’s frequent personal broadcasts have become one of the high spots of the war. When his language grows too indiscreet his own electricians sometimes cut him off the air, but his broadcasts, always boasting great victories and threatening death and destruction to all enemies, have continued.
