CRICKET

FOUR CENTURIES SCORED CANTERBURY’S BOWLING RELISHED By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, January 8. The second day’s play in the Plunket Shield cricket match between Auckland and Canterbury has left the home side in a commanding position for an outright win. Continuing its first innings to-day, Auckland carried the total to 590. Canterbury replied with 118 for three wickets. Conditions up to the afternoon tea adjournment were again perfect. but heavy rain set in two overs after the resumption and caused a postponement of play for the day. Four centuries were registered in Auckland’s innings, a record in Plunket Shield cricket. On the previous day both Whilelaw and Postles scored centuries. The three-figure mark was reached to-day by Scott and Matheson who, at the end of yesterday’s play had scored 53 and 51 respectively. The pair added 224 for the seventh wicket, the record partnership for this wicket being 265 held by J. L. Powell and N. Doreen for Canterbury against Otago

in 1929-30. Scott in his first Plunket Shield match scored 122 and Matheson also registered his first century in Shield cricket with 112. The Canterbury bowlers were again handicapped by the fast conditions, Cromb eventually proving most successful with three wickets for 170 runs. The batsmen were not troubled by the attack. Canterbury started badly when Hadlee was dismissed for three and Cromb, when batting well, played the ball on to his wicket. Gasson played correctly for 34, and Menzies made a good 46 not out. Stokes was aggressive for 19 not out. Matheson has taken two wickets for 31, the other wicket falling to Cowie. Scores:— AUCKLAND First Innings P. E Whitelaw, b Cromb 108 A. J.
