RIFLE SHOOTING

VOLUNTEER CUP The Timaru Defence Rifle Club held the Volunteer Cup competition on Saturday over ranges of 300, 500 and 600 yards. Heavy rain during the day eased off and the shoot was fired without any interruption. W. T. Taylor with 97 won the Volunteer Cup, a good score considering the conditions. J. Green, I. Johnson and W. Duncan all finished with 96. At 300 yards J. Green put on 34, finishing with a four. F. J Black with a four finish also scored 34 at 500 yards. W. Duncan and W. Taylor also got 34. At the long range I. Johnson, under hard conditions, shot 34, his board reading 5 5 5 5 4 5 5 —34, a splendid shoot. In addition to winning the cup, Taylor also won the Gold Rifle and the weekly trophy. I. Johnson counted out W. Duncan for second place. The scores were:—
