LOCOMOTIVE STRIKES SLIP
By Telegraph —Press Association GREYMOUTH, January 9 Heavy rains yesterday caused slips on various West Coast roads. One near Greymouth blocked the Omoto road, delaying the 5 a.m. train to-day from Christchurch for several hours. The locomotive and a carriage were slightly damaged when a large piece of rock was struck beside the line. A washout occurred on the Reefton road. Slips and wgsh-outs between Waiho and Weheka blocked the road. The Otira Gorge road also was blocked. Three and two-fifth inches of rain fell at Arthur's Pass for 24 hours to 9 a.m. on Saturday, while more than two inches fell in Greymouth. The Greymouth Jockey Club was threatened with the loss of 600 head of livestock on Saturday night when the Grey River -was in high flood, but the animals were eventually brought to high ground at the racecourse. Water also covered the road between Greymouth and Reefton.
