SLIPS AND WASHOUTS

ANXIOUS TIME FOR MOTORISTS By Telegraph—Press Association WESTPORT, January 9. The many people returning from holidays to resume work on Monday will long remember the last stage of the journey as heavy continuous rain through Friday night and early on Satui’day morning caused slips, washouts, flooded roads and other troubles. A big slip near Tiroroa, in the Buller Gorge, carried part of the road into the river and passengers had to cross over the slip to rejoin cars on their side. A hold up occurred on the WestportGrey mouth coastal road near Addison’s Flat owing to part of the road being heavily flooded. Cars got through late in the evening. One carrying firm had 240 in and out passengers for the day and was greatly relieved when all the cars safely negotiated the flooded area, the fall of the water being almost as rapid as the rise. A washout occurred on the railway line near Birchfield but was speedily repaired and traffic resumed. Cars got through to Nelson and from Nelson to Westport to-day, but afterthe service cars go through to-morrow morning there will be a temporary closure until Tuesday while the road is being repaired. Traffic will continue between Westport and Greymouth via the coastal road.
