BUILDING RETURNS
TIMARU FIGURES A decrease of 36 buildings is shown in the building returns for Timaru for the last twelve months compared with the returns for the previous year. During the last twelve months 52 new buildings were erected in Timaru at an expenditure of £90.879, while during 1936 88 buildings were erected, the amount involved being £94.361. The principal buildings erected during 1937 were the new wing at the Timaru Hospital, valued at £36.000, and a block of twelve flats involving the expenditure of £lO.OOO. Although the monetary returns for 1936 were £3,482 greater than for last year there was only one building valued at more than £lO,OOO. That was a bank building valued at £13.250. A private hospital valued at £B7OO was the next most valuable building constructed during 1936. The sum of £7897 was spent on additions to the Public Hospital. The monthly figures for 1937, with those for 1936 given in parentheses, were as follows: January Seven buildings, value £3084 (16, value £22,799). February—Three, value £2738 (seven, value £17.244).
