RAILWAY TRAFFIC
RECORD FIGURES CLAIMED Bv Telegraph —Press- Association CHRISTCHURCH. January 8. Although no actual figures are available for comparison, Railway Department officials are convinced that the number of passengers carried during the past week constitutes a record. From Christchurch almost 8,000 people have been transported to the South and West Coast. The figures are as follows: To South 5,294, to West Coast 2,640. These figures apply to express trains only. The traffic is so heavy that the Department is still making arrangements for running of relief trains. To-day 1500 passengers were conveyed South and 800 went to the West Coast. Three trains travelled South and two went to the West Coast, and in each case the demand for accommodation was so great that assistant engines had to be run to cope with the load. Indications are that the rush will continue next week.
