GAME OF DARTS
HER MAJESTY WINS LONDON, December 18. Watched by factory workers and clerks, the King and Queen played darts at the Slough Social Centre last night. Their Majesties had expressed a wish to see the Centre when the members, who work on the Slough Trading Estate, were enjoying a normal social evening. They were received by Mr Noel Mobbs, chairman of the Centre, and went straight to the games room. Three games of darts were in progress when the King entered, and as one player, Mr F. Draper, scored a “double,” the Queen remarked that it was a good shot, and said she would like to test her skill. Another player, Mr Davies, handed Her Majesty his three darts. “I have never thrown a dart before,” she said. “What do I do? Where do I stand?” King Throws With Left Hand After listening to brief instructions Hei Majesty threw, scoring first a seven, then a 13, and finally a one, totalling 21. Handing the darts to the King, she invited him to try. Throwing with his left hand, His Majesty scored a seven, a three and a nine, totalling 19. He laughingly remarked that his wife had beaten him. Turning to those around him he added: “Darts is a very good sport.”
The King and Queen then visited the gymnasium, where they watched boys being instructed in boxing, wrestling and physical exercises. In the women’s recreation room the Queen was keenly interested in fencing, and told Miss Norah Webb, who had just finished a match, that she thought it an excellent sport for women. Teams Swimming Race An inter-team race between the Centre Club and the Reading Swimming Club was taking place when they reached the swimming pool. The Centre just won, and the King called Mr Stanley Bell, the British Empire Games swimmer, who is secretary of the swimming section of the Centre, to him and congratulated his team on their splendid race. When they left for Royal Lodge, Windsor, where they will spend the week-end, the King and Queen were given a great send-off by hundreds of factory workers.
