JAPAN’S WARNING TO BRITAIN FORMER STATEMENT CORRECTED GROWING ARROGANCE OF NIPPONESE United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—copyright TOKIO, January I. It is seml-officially stated in Tokio that the interview with the Japanese Minister of the Interior (Admiral Suetsugu) as was alleged to have been published in the political journal "Kaizo,” has been “grossly misquoted and mistranslated” by the Paris press. The Dome! News Agency has issued an English translation Which states:— “Japan is aiming at ultimate Chinese and Japanese co-operation and peace in China. Whether or not thia means the exclusion of the whites is an important question Which should mark the turning point in world history. I believe that lasting peace cannot be realised unless the coloured peoples a.e delivered from the white shackles under which they are living a miserable life.” Admiral Buetsugu added: “If China depends solely on the alleged British assltance in continuing the hostilities, it would be inevitable that Japan would stop the fountain head of the resistance, even at the risk .of a clash with Britain, but I am inclined to believe that Britain would readily listen to reason.” “The white yoke on Asia must go,” was among the sensational Statements attributed to the Japanese Minister for the interior (Admiral Suetsugu), and quoted in the Paris press from the influential Japanese political review, "Kaizo,” which is published in Tokyo. Admral Suetsugu is alleged to have also said: “The mercantile interests of the whites must vanish. British aid to China must be stopped even at the cost of war. I refuse to believe that the Americans Will fight us if we attack Britain. The rapid realisation of liberation will naturally bring a general conflagration, but whatever we take the result will be the same, namely, a general conflagration. Thus fate wills it.”

JAPANESE INFLUENCE IN SHANGHAI

The Chinese Foreign Office has seht an identical memoranda to the British, French and American Governments, requesting prompt measures to prevent the enforcement of the Shanghai Municipal Council's recent proclamation giving their police emergency powers. Control of Radio and Cables The Shanghai correspondent of “The Times” says: The employees in the Chinese radio administration walked out under orders from Chunking. The Japanese have taken over full control and the service is being operated by Japanese. There is no censorship of messages.

Japanese censors arrived at the cable offices at 10.45 this morning.

“DYING LANGUAGE” JAPANESE ATTITUDE TO ENGLISH United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 6, 8.30 p.m.) TOKIO, January 8. University students are refusing .to attend classes in English. They ask Contemptuously: “What is the use of studying a dying language.” They assert that all foreigners will soon be expelled from the country. This belief in the expulsion of foreigners is shared by foreign traders, but is denied by the Government. The aeronautical correspondent of “The Daily Herald” says that secret orders have been issued to the Indian and Iraq commands to have the Royal Air Force squadrons ready to leave for Singapore-and participate in the manoeuvres being held there shortly.
