TELEPHONE EXCHANGE BUSINESS The growth in popularity of the telephone is typified in the records of the Geraldine Telephone Exchange where the number of subscribers connected during last yea increased by 40. At January 1 last there were 420 subscribers compared with 380 on January 1, 1937. The recent concessions in regard to the charge for long distance calls have greatly popularised the use of toll calls, and the number of outward calls during 1937 increased by the astonishing total of 5758. In 1937 outward calls totalled 46,116 compared with 40,358 in 1936. The expansion in business has outgrown the facilities at the exchange where accommodation has been inadequate for some time. To cope with the situation plans are under way for the erection of a modern exchange building early this year. PERSONAL Mrs G. A. Haskins (Christchurch) is visiting Geraldine.
