TEMUKA
FARM LABOUR SHORTAGE TURNIP HOERS IN DEMAND Difficulty in securing labour for the hoeing of early swede crops in the district is reported to have been experienced by a number of Temuka farmers. From the total of men registered on sustenance there is apparently enough labour available but difficulty has been experienced either through the unwillingness of the men to go out or through the employers not being able to locate those open for engagement. Part of the trouble has been due to the latter reason, for the broken weather of recent weeks has made it necessary to carry on hoeing when a fine day did occur and it has sometimes then been impossible for farmers to locate men free to go to work. However, it has also been reported that men offered work had refused it. In one case, the wet weather had induced such a heavy growth of weeds that attention to the crop was urgently required and a neighbour therefore gave his assistance by lending his hoers for a short period.
