CRICKET

OTAGO EEATEN BY 10 WICKETS SHIELD MATCH AGAINST AUCKLAND By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, January 3. Auckland had little difficulty in scoring an outright win when Plunkct Shield cricket match with Otago was resumed at Eden Park to-day. Requiring another 102 runs lor victory, Auckland's opening batsmen, Whitelaw and Pasties, carried the overnight score if 36 to 138, Auckland thus winning by ten wickets. Only two overs had been bowled today when a heavy shower of rain caused an adjournment for an hour. When play was resumed, the wicket was found to be tricky, the ball kicking up sharply on occasions. Dunning was brought on and set a leg field with four fieldsmen close in and three more in the outfield. Both batsmen were repeatedly struck on the pads, but each penetrated the field on occasions to .score boundaries on the leg side. Whitelaw gave one chance when he lifted an over-pitched ball from Dunning to Elmes in the outfield, the fieldsman dropping a hard catch. At lunch Auckland had scored 100 after an hour and a half of play, Whitelaw being 44 and Postles 42. Both batsmen carried on steadily on the resumption, Whitelaw scoring the winning single off Dunning at 2 o’clock. A pleasing feature was the good form shown by Postles, who after a small score in the first innings, batted freely and attractively in the second. Apart from his one chance Whitelaw gave his usual sound display. Uttley used five bowlers in trying to break the partnership. Dunning appeared most likely to take a wicket, and Elmes had the batsmen reaching out and missing the ball on occasions. Otago's fielding was again of a high standard. Scores.—
