WHITE BUTTERFLIES
RAPID SPREAD Supplies of the white butterfly parasite ordered some months ago from the Government Plant Research Bureau, Palmerston North, by the TeMuka and Geraldine A. and P. Association have not yet come to hand. The butterfly has spread so rapidly that in the Orari and Winchester districts alarm has been expressed for the future of farm crops, such as turnips, swedes and rape. In and around Temuka the pest seems to have abated somewhat by comparison with previous years, but that has not been the experience at Milford. Last year liberations of parasites were made in that district, but the butterflies are reported to be more numerous than ever. Where the butterflies are most numerous the farmers seem confident of the ability of the parasite to counteract the spread of the pest, as has been accomplished in par f s of the North Island where rape could not be grown for some years until this season.
