Sydney Grand, whose consistency entitled him to start favourite in a weak field in the Makarewa Trot at Invercargill, pulled backers through, but only by the narrowest margin. A little fancied opponent in Goldstreak was beaten only by a nose after being driven to an expensive break when half-way up the straight.
