SUNBURNT HAIR

BEAUTY CULTURE FOR MEN It has long been an open secret that those waves which adorn many a male head have been put there, not by Nature, but through the good offices of the “perm," states an English writer. So much is this the case that young men with a natural wave take as much trouble to water it out as does any negro damsel to get rid of the betraying kink. This summer in Britain has shown another direction in which the male seeks to take advantage of those beautifying methods which give his sister so great an advantage over him. While he may still not paint his nails nor add to his eyelashes, nobody can prevent him from getting sunburnt, and he may just as well have acquired the manly, open-air look out of a bottle as in wandering bareheaded in the Himalayas, which most men neither can nor would approach. On the motor-bicycle to-day, there, fore, there are not only maidens who, having retained their darker locks, yet give them that splash of sunshine which suggests the sports girl. There is the pilot of the machine, the veteran in the goggles and the macintosh, who also applies to his hair just enough fluid to suggest unmitigated sunshine. There are hundreds of of him, and what the office or the workshop prevents the sunshine bottle does, and, what is more, it does not wear off in

the distressing manner of holiday tan, leaving a mere cheese-like complexion behind. It lasts as long as the hair lasts—until it grows out—and the fluid can be easily reapplied. Even so, the young man has still much to learn from the maiden in the art of the open-air, the first being some rearrangement in the direction of comfort in the clothes he is permitted to wear.
