Cheaper Fruit

Mr J. O. Boniface, a well-known businessman of Palmerston North, has just returned from a visit to Australia and in the course of an interview said he had been amazed at the cheapness of fruit in Australia compared with New Zealand. Describing a visit to the orange groves of South Australia Mr Boniface said it was possible to buy for a shilling almost as many oranges as a person could carry. Stock Paddocks With a view to bringing about a satisfactory arrangement for the collection of fees from actual users of stock paddocks In the country, it is the intention of the Hawke’s Bay County Council to approach the freezing companies and the stock agents of the district. “The council does not consider it fair that the ratepayers as a whole should be called upon to meet an item of expenditure In which only a certain percentage of ratepayers is interested,” said the county clerk, Mr W. J. McConnell. “The upkeep of stock paddocks in the county last year involved the council in an expenditure of £550, and it is felt that such a burden should be carried by those who benefit from whatever expenditure is necessary. It will be necessary to obtain advice as to what charges may reasonably be made and also to establish a suitable basis of collection.”
