ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY
MR S. COX RE-ELECTED CHAIRMAN Having resigned from the position as a result of a prosecution for shooting protected birds preying on newly liberated fish, Mr S. Cox was unanimously re-elected president of the Waimate Acclimatisation Society at a meeting of the council on Thursday evening. Mr Cox thanked the members for their vote of confidence in him. Also present were Messrs G. 131worth, W. T. Anderson, J. Tiffen, J. F. Rathgen, A. N. Higgins, F. Nash, F. Pollock, W. D. Paterson, G. S. Foord, N, Mines, and J. Hutt. The ranger <Mr W. Cottee) reported that a youth had been caught taking
fish from the Waimate Creek, an offence which was fairly prevalent. It was agreed to place the matter in the hands of the Probation Officer and to instruct the ranger to supply the names of other boys implicated. The ranger further reported that during the month several thousands of stranded fish in the Waihao had been removed higher up the river. The Oamaru Society wrote stating that in view of the appreciable incirase in game, an open season for 1938 was favoured. The Council agreed to support the recommendation. The chairman was appointed to represent the Society at a conference of South Island societies in Christchurch on December 3. provided that the conference was for individual societies and not for groups.
