WAR ON RACKETEERS
OPERATIONS IN CINEMA INDUSTRY United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received November 25, 5.5 p.m.) HOLLYWOOD, November 24. The existence of a racketeer group, to which the cinema industry’s 12,000 extras are compelled to pay a tribute is indicated by tlie Investigations of the police in connection with the gangster activities. District Attorney Buron Fittes has ordered the detention of an assistant casting director, employed to a major studio, who allegedly used his position to coerce extras to contribute to the racketeers’ percentage of their daily wage. The police believe that hundreds of extras owing to fear of loss of work, physical injury or damage to clothes, which are essential equipment, joined the “clubs” organised for the purpose of collecting the tribute.
