Mr Cordell Hull (Secretary of State), In the course of the first exclusive interview granted any foreign newspaper since he assumed office, told •"Hie Daily Telegraph" that the successful conclusion of an Anglo-Ameri-can trade pact would be an achievement of outstanding Importance toward world appeasement. Mr Hull expressed hope that the progress would be speedy enough to warrant his belief that the pact could be signed by the summer. He said the nations had tried to achieve peace by diplomacy for eighteen years, but they had failed. The only chance of world recovery from the present unsettled state lies along the road of liberal economic policies. These would enable the people to live In greater comfort, with more certainty of a secure existence. "The times are serious,” added Mr Hull. "The shadow of war darkens the world. Never was it more Important for the people to exhibit vision and restraint. World trade is the only means of improving the living standards and discouraging imperialistic aggresion.” Mr Hull added that dictatorial control of production prices arouses selfishness and discrimination. Force breeds the spirit of war, which haunts the world. Armament fcr peace is sane and necessary in any country, but armament for war and aggression must be highly condemned, If only for the reason that it took away so many people from their normal occupations, and removed so much money, which might otherwise be used for the general good of the nations.” WAY TO WEALTH AND HAPPINESS ABANDONMENT OF DOCTRINE OF SELF SUFFICIENCY United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright (Received November 25, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON. Professor Bentwlch. in a speech before the Royal Empire Society conference on Empire development, appealed for the abandonment of the doctrine of self-sufficiency in humanity as the wells of trade by throwing the open door of other countries, particularly Australia for migration of Jewish refugees from Germany. Lord Dufferln and Ava said that the next decennlum would see renewed efforts to develop the colonies to contribute to the wealth and happiness of the world. Colonial trade would not be confined to the Empire.
