MILFORD

TEACHER FAREWELL SOCIAL At the invitation of Mr and Mrs G. R. Parke, the teachers of the Milford Sunday School and members of the Bible Class, held a tea in the home of Mrs Parke to farewell Miss Gwen Lyall, who is leaving for the south shortly to take up a nursing- position. After the supper interval, Mr A. D. Crossman, superintendent of the Sunday School, made mention of the work Miss Lyall had done as a Sunday School teacher, and said that she had always been most consistent. He thanked Mr and Mrs Parke for their invitation to hold the farewell at their home. The Rev. W. F. Niehol, who made the presentation of a Bible to Miss Lyall on behalf of the pupils and members of the Bible Class, said that although he had known Miss Lyall only for a brief period he had found her very enthusiastic in her Sunday School work. Miss Lyall, in reply, said that it had been a pleasure to work in the Sunday School. She considered that the pupils and members of the Bible Class were among the best with whom she had been associated. The evening was spent in singing and competitions, the latter being won by Misses Lyall and L. Cain, Mrs Crossman and Mr W. McCormick. Two of Miss Lyall’s favourite hymns, “Lead Kindly Light” and “Abide With Me,” were sung. ST. JOSEPH’S DANCE A social and dance held by the St. Joseph’s Parish in the clubrooms jn Wednesday evening was well attended. The euchre prizes were won by Mrs G. Fisher, Miss E. Scannell, Messrs W. Double and J. Downes. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M. Johnson and Mr J. Liston. The music was supplied by a Timaru orchestra and extras were played by Miss M. Cain and Mr S. Hansen. Mr W. J. Seeler was master of ceremonies. QUEEN CARNIVAL Largely as a result of the success of the recent community sing, the Basketball Queen Committe’s candidate (Miss Dorothy Bisdee) has had her flag raised to the top of the pole at the Crown Hotel corner. The Caledonian Queen (Miss Maureen Coffey), who had been leading for the last week, has dropped to second place, and the Domain Queen (Miss Dorothy Laurenson) remains in third position.
