COBBERS’ CLUB The remarkable growth and popularity of the Timaru Cobbers’ Club which was formed about six months ago was amply demonstrated at the final meeting of the club on Saturday evening, when 75 boys attended and took part in organised sport and games. Formed six months ago, with a membership of a dozen boys, the club has gained in popularity week by week until to-day its membership stands at 60. The object o fthe club is to enable its members to enjoy healthy fellowship combined with physical development. Every effort has been made to stimulate and maintain the interest of members in the club and its activities. How well this has been achieved is indicated by the size of the membership and the large attendances at the club meetings, which are held each Saturday night. After the first few meetings news of the club’s existence filtered throughout the schools of Timaru and practically every night since the club's inception has seen the membership increase. Spacious rooms permit the members of. Toe H to conduct the club evenings on a scale that compares favourably with the Crichton Cobbers’ Club, Christchurch, which, with its membership of more than 300 boys and young men, was the example which the Timaru Branch sought to follow. With the assistance of competent coaches the members of Toe H have been able to provide the boys with excellent tuition in boxing and wrestling. For those who are not interested in either of these forms of sport, there are organised games. Each evening the members are given a cup of tea and a biscuit before they leave the club rooms.

Keen enthusiasm was displayed by the boys on Saturday night and quite a number regretted that the club evenings were not going to be conducted during the summer. The club had met with success that far exceeded their highest expectations, remarked several members of Toe H, who also paid a tribute to the assistance that had been given the branch by the instructors, who had played an important part in the success that had been attained. The winners of the various events were announced at the end of the final evening as follows:—Boxing, T. Aldridge; wrestling, L. Blair; ping pong, D. McLean; quoits, J. Nelson; darts, K. Manning.
