SWIMMING

CLUB TO HOLD CARNIVAL A decision to co-operate with the Basketball Queen Committee in holding a water carnival and dance during "Learn to Swim” week, the proceeds to be equally divided between the two bodies, was made at a meeting of the Teinuka Swimming Club on Monday evening. In the absence of the president (Mr A. V. Simmons), Mr S. B. Reid chaired the meeting.

A sub-committee comprising Messrs Reid, J. Boyle and the secretary (Mr H. C. Cornwell) was appointed to meet representatives of the Basketball Association to arrange a suitable programme.

The question of securing club badges was raised by Mr H. McMillan. Mr McMillan produced several specimen badges and after some discussion m regard to the design, it was agreed that prices be secured for 50, and that Mr McMillan submit these to the next meeting. The secretary was instructed to write to the Domain Board in regard to having electric light installed at the baths as soon as possible, and also conveniences.

The delegates to the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Centre presented a comprehensive report of the business done and were accorded a vote of thanks.

RELIEF FUND OPENED In keeping with the Borough Council’s decision at its last meeting, a subscription list in support of the Far East Relief Fund was opened yesterday at the Council Chambers. The Council gave £3/3/- and an anonymous gift of 10/- has also been received.

LABOUR PARTY SOCIAL Owing to a change in the usual night for their fortnightly social, the euchre party and dance of the Temuka branch of the New Zealand Labour Party which was held on Monday evening was not so well attended as usual. The prize winners were Mesdames M. Swap and J, Craig and Messrs N. Walker and T. Relhana. A competltlor was won by Miss P. Waters. A. Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Hislop and Mr G. Cations. Mr W. J. Seeler was master of ceremonies.

PERSONAL A motion of sympathy with Mrs J. H. Denison in the death of her sister was passed at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union yesterday afternoon. Miss Molly Nevin, Waimate, is spending a few days in Temuka as the guest of Mrs K. Gillum, Hamilton Street.

Mr Sydney Chapman left Temuka recently to take up a position in Methven.

“HILLS OF OLD WYOMING” A colourful, fast moving romantic portrayal of outdoor life in the West will come to the Elite Theatre tonight where Paramount’s “Hills of Old Wyoming” will be seen with William Boyd in the star role of "Hopalong Cassidy.” The film centres about a large reservation in Wyoming where a crooked Government agent tries to use his Indian wards as a screen for his sinister operations as head of a cattle rustling gang, Cassidy, with his pals “Windy” and “Mesquite ‘Lucky’ Jenkins,” is a peace-loving -amber when the picture opens. The three together with their neighbours rise in protest, however, at the continued cattle thieving. Paramount’s "The Crime Nobody Saw,” an unusual mystery story with a comic twist, will be the supporting feature with Lew Ayres, Ruth Coleman, Eugene Pallette and Benny Bakey in the leading roles. It is a thrilling story which moves at a rapid pace and it has everything it takes to make first class motion picture entertainment.
