TEMUKA

WINCHESTER SHOW SCHEDULE

ASSOCIATION REVIEWS CLASSES

Consideration to the schedule for the annual Winchester Show was given by the executive of the Temuka and Geraldine A. and P. Association at a meeting yesterday, when sub-com-mittees appointed to revise the sections reported their recommendations. Mr J. E. Green presided and there were present—Messrs R. Maddren, G. Fletcher, R. J. Edgar, L. J. Wareing, F. Charles. F. South. A. Bisdee, D. Bain, L. J. Grant, W. J. Lyon, J. C. South and A. Bain. No alterations were recommended by the committees for the fat sheep, dogs and dog trials, grain and seeds, roots and vegetables, potato-growing, and calf-rearing sections. With each committee’s report a recommendation regarding judges was tendered, and in most cases the recommendations were confirmed.

New Cattle Classes For the cattle committee, Mr Maddren reported that the only changes proposed were one for Jersey bull calves, for which a first prize had been given, and one for heifers, the conditions pertaining to which the committee had yet to ascertain. No other changes were proposed and the committee’s report was adopted. In the case of draught horses, Mr Edgar reported that the committee recommended the Association to approach several breeders who in the past had given prizes for special classes. It was agreed to approach the breeders mentioned.

It was decided that in the light horses, cobs and ponies sections, a class for hackney mares be deleted. A competition for jumping ponies not over 14.2 hands, to be ridden by a boy or girl not over 16 years, was added on the recommendation of Mr Charles.

Stud Sheep The steady increase in stud sheep entries entitled the Association to extend its schedule by the Inclusion of a class for two-tooth ewes in all stud breeds, reported the sub-committee in charge of that section, for which Mr L. J. Grant spoke. The executive approved the suggestion, but pointed out that it would mean a big Increase in prize-money.

In the pig section it was agreed to include a class for Tamworths, and that there be no weight restrictions in respect to the class for fat pigs.

Alterations in the miscellaneous, needle and handwork and children’s sections were numerous. The subcommittee, which comprised Mesdames J. C. South, G. Fletcher, L. A. Nicholas and W. F. Evans, recommended that eight classes be deleted and that the following six be substituted: Light walnut cake, Jar of marmalade, two bottles tomato sauce, pair embroidered tea waggon cloths, article in smocking, and bran biscuits. The other changes totalled 11, and were in the form of minor amendments to classes already in the schedule. The executive decided to replace the existing set of 14 championship ribbons, which were worn out. The ribbons would be issued to exhibitors for use only in the stock parade, and would remain the Association’s property. It was agreed to award miniature cups to the exhibitors of champions. Two new championships approved were for saddle and harness ponies. Field Day Supported Permission was granted the Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union to hold a field day and picnic at the showgrounds on December 11. The Fields Superintendent of the Department of Agriculture (Mr R. McGillivray) wrote stating that he would be pleased to do anything he could to assist the Association with the show. He hoped to be present. A gift of £l/1/- from the Bank of New South Wales was received with thanks. The resignation of Mr John de Renzy was received with regret. The letter stated that the writer considered the subscription too great for the benefits received, and members mentioned that other had expressed disagreement with the charge.

SHOP DAY APPEAL PLUNKET SOCIETY’S BENEFITS Liberal support from the public of town and country was yesterday given the Temuka Plunket Society which held its annual shop day appeal. Gifts of produce from the farm and home were received, and the shop attendants had a busy day attending to the customers. From an early hour the shop, attended by Mesdames A. W. Buzan, G. Hancox and Ackroyd, was open and the result was a good day’s business. In conjunction with th: shop a competition in estimating the weight of a lamb was held and a copper trail was

started. The live weight of the lamb was 6611 b and estimates tendered by W. M. Cotterill, “Two Mugs” and J. Donohue were all correct, a draw to decide the competition being won by the anonymous entrants. The copper trail realised £l/1/7. The winner of a competition for a cake was Barry Andrews.

At the conclusion of the day the Society's thanks for assistance were expressed by the president (Miss G. A. Brown) to Mrs A. Hayhurst for the use of the shop, Mr and Mrs Buzan for the provision of morning and afternoon tea, the Power Board for erecting the Society's banner and Mr W. McFarlane for the gift of the lamb. There were 33 members of the Society who took part in the collection of contributions in cash and articles and three extra helpers in the shop, and to those persons Miss Brown also extended her thanks. AMATEUR ATHLETICS GOOD TIME FOR THREE MILES The excellent club time of 16 minutes 20 seconds for the three miles event was recorded by R. Taylor, who ran from scratch, at the weekly meeting of the Temuka Athletic Club. Taylor was the only back marker and ran a well-judged race, winning by half a lap.
