SURPRISE IN ROME
D’ANNUNZIO’S ABSENCE FROM FUNCTION United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright (Received November 22, 10.15 p.m.) ROME, November 22. The abscnc; of the Italian poet and wartime airman, Gabrielle d’Annunzio from the re-opening of the Royal Italian Academy, of which he is president, occasioned surprise. Gabriella d’Annui :lo sent a brief message of homage to the Academy. It is stated that he declined to attend when he learned he was not to be accorded a public reception on his arrival In Rome. He has always been a friend of France, and there seems to be an Idea that he might make embarrassing statements on International affairs.
