LEAKY TAPS

CAUSE OF WATER SHORTAGE Pointing out that the level of the Borough water supply reservoirs had fallen three feet in a week, Cr. M. H. Richards expressed the opinion at a meeting of the Borough Council last night that the shortage was largely attributable to leaky taps. Cr. Richards said a large percentage of taps in the borough were defective and water was allowed to run away indiscriminately. The Council had inspectors who could go round the houses to see that all taps were functioning and he would like to see that done. Cr. W. H. Hall explained that during the period referred to three leaks had been found in the race and at that time the race was being cleaned. "It is not the leaks in the race I mean; it is the leaks which occur after the water gets to Timaru,” said Cr. Richards. Cr. Hall said there was plenty of water in the supply to cope with leaky taps, of which he admitted there were a great many in Timaru. The week had been unusual in that the race had been defective and that It had been cleaned. Cr. J. R. Hart also referred to the prevalence of leaky taps and agreed that an Inspector should be sent round to inspect defective taps and washers Cr. Hall promised to bring the matter under the engineer’s notice.
