Fine Calceolarias A feature of the display In the glasshouse at Timaru Park at present is a fine exhibit of calceolarias which furnishes the whole of the south side of the house. The young fronds of the ferns are making splendid growth and the fernery is a delightfully cool and shady spot on warm days. Scenic Reserve The committee of the Timaru Beautifying Association yesterday decided to vote £2O towards the cost of employing three men for four months attending to trees in the Scenic Reserve. Quite a number of the trees planted in the Reserve have died, while others are in need of immediate attention Handling Christmas Traffic To facilitate the handling of traffic in Timaru during the holiday period, the Timaru Borough Council at a meeting last night, decided to appoint two additional officers for a fortnight from Christmas Eve. "There is every prospect of the coming season being a busy one, and the extra help will be needed. ’ said Traffic Inspector C. H. Newcome in making the request for assistance. Visit to Technical College “There is no doubt that they do some very practical work at the Timaru Technical College, and I think a visit would be amply rewarded,” said the Mayor (Mr P. C. Vlnnell) at a meeting of the Timaru Borough Council last night when an invitation to visit the School next week was received. “I feel that they do not get the publicity and assistance they are entitled to." The invitation was accepted. Traffic Cencus The question of the provision of an overhead bridge at Strathallan Street has been under discussion for some time, and in order to ascertain the volume of traffic to and from the wharves during a given period a census is at present being taken. A start was made with the securing of the necessary information yesterday, a man being stationed near the crossing. He will be there from 7.30 a.m. to 5.30 each day this week, and will take a tally of all types of traffic which goes to and from the waterfront, and also that to and from Station Street and Cain’s Terrace. Naval Pageant The ceremony of delivery of the King’s Colour to the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy oy the Governor-General, Lord Galway, at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, yesterday afternoon was the occasion of a naval pageant unique in the history of the city, and was watched with tense interest by a large gathering. After days of broken weather and high winds, the weather cleared remarkably in the early afternoon and 300 ranks and ratings from the Achilles and Leander, headed by the bands from both ships, paraded in bright sunshine.

Youth Injured Stuart Reid, aged 17, an employee of the Timaru Wrecking Company, was admitted to the Timaru Hospital yesterday afternoon suffering from a wound in the thigh, received when he came into collision with a taxi driven by Mr Walter Townsend, at the corner of Latter and Church Streets. He swerved to avoid a crash and the door handle of the car caught him, breaking off in his thigh. Another Ship Wanted So great has been the response by ex-servicemen to the invitation to travel to Sydney by the Maunganui to take part in a special observance of Anzac Day on the occasion of the celebrations of the 150tli anniversary of the Commonwealth that it has been necessary to conduct a ballot among applicants. The question of an additional ship being available to take those who are not successful in the ballots is now being considered. Mr J. Spence, secretary of the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association, stated he was hoping it would be possible to arrange for another ship. “We could fill another ship easily,” he said. Little Known Regulation The ignorance of some motorists of a section of tlie Traffic Regulations giving right-of-way to an inspector proceeding with a siren in operation was reported on by Traffic Inspector C. H. Newcome to a meeting of the Timaru Borough Council last night. “Some motorists do not realise that they have to give way or stop when they hear a siren, making the task of apprehending speeding cars very dangerous," he said. Regulation 9, section 4, of the Traffic Regulations, 1936, states that every driver of a motor vehicle who has cause to believe that he is being signalled to stop or make way by means of a siren shall do so as soon as possible with safety. Buzan the splendid sum of £23/11/6 towards our funds, being the proceeds of a concert and collection in Temuka. May I through your columns express to all who shared in this generous sum the very warm thanks of the Board of Trustees and of our blfnd community. The money will be well and carefully spent. The work of the Institute continues to grow steadily. We now have more than 180 blind men, women and children receiving training or in permanent employment at the Institute, and we render service to more than 900 others scattered throughout the Dominion. We extend a warm invitation to people from Temuka who happen to visit Auckland to call at the Institute during working hours to see the work in progress.”
