OTIPUA

SOCIAL AND PRESENTATION On Friday night a large gathering of residents from Otipua and surrounding districts attended a social evening in honour of Mr and Mrs G. Jackson who have left the district to retire in Umaru. A large number of nondancers played cards, the prizes being won by Mrs M. Richards and Mr A. Coupland. Music for the dance was supplied by a Tlmaru orchestra, with extras by Misses M. Evans and E. Arden. Mr G. Hoare assisted by Mr E. Hampton was M.C. Mr T. Hughes who presided said Mr and Mrs Jackson had lived and helped in the district for nearly 40 years, and the residents felt that they could not depart without some fitting celebration of their retirement. Mr P. Watson congratulated Mr and Mrs Jackson on their work in the district and on being able to retire while still in the prime of life.

Mr N. Bell, on behalf of Southburn neighbours, spoke of Mr Jackson's capability as a farmer, gene slty as a neighbour, and his knowledge as a breeder of horses, this being shown by his success In the show ring on many occasions. Mr H. Cross and Mr A. Godwin endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers and wished the departing guests long life, health and happiness in their new home. Miss M. Coughlan, president of the Otipua Women’s Institute, spoke of Mrs Jackson’s enthusiasm and willingness as a member of the Women’s Institute and on behalf of her fellow members thanked her for her untiring interest.

Mr R. Hutton, in presenting Mr Jackson with a chiming clock, stated that, being the oldest resident in the district, he had known Mr and Mrs Jackson since the time they had come to "Summerhaze” farm 40 years ago and he had always found them obliging friends.

Mrs Hutton then presented Mrs Jackson with a beautiful crystal floating bowl with the best wishes of the district.

Mr Jackson returned thanks for the kind wishes and beautiful presents and said that although they were sorry to leave the district they would be residing in Tlmaru and would be pleased to see old neighbours any time they wished to call.
