The Chamber of Deputies passed a vote of confidence in the Government by 339 votes to 160 after a two days’ barrage of criticism from the Opposition concerning the internal and general financial policy and foreign affairs policy.

The Prime Minister (M. Chautemps) was assured of a- majority when M. Flandin asked supporters of the Centre not to vote, tnereby giving the Government a free hand.

“I believe that defence expenditure, although heavy, is, nevertheless, an economy in the present-day condition of Europe,” declared M. Chautemps in a speech reiterating France’s fidelity to her pledges and the League of Nations. He said that France would do everything she could to restore the authority of the League. He also referred to the consolidation of accord with Great Britain, to which France was united in an equal desire for peace.
