SOUTH END CLUB OPENING DAY The South End Swimming Club held the official opening of its second season in pleasant weather at the Century Baths on Saturday afternoon. There was a large gathering of spectators and swimmers, representative of all South Canterbury clubs. All the races were keenly contested and on Saturday’s form the South End Club should do well in inter-club events. A feature was the obstacle and teams’ relay races which created a lot of excitement.

The officials w’ere: Patron, Mr F.. Chittock; starter and timekeeper; Mr P. Whisker; handicappers. Messrs C. de Clifford, S. Crerar and L. MacGregor; announcer, Mr A. Wyatt; judges, Messrs H. J. Clark. A. C. Rippin and J. Rodgers; stewardesses. Mesdames G. Griffiths, Beynon, Foden; stewards, Messrs G. S. Griffiths. Stevens, Bignell. Mr F. Chittock, the patron, after welcoming the Mayor and Mayoress, the swimmers and friends, said that Mr Vinnell in his official capacity took a great interest in all pes of. sport. He menttoned that it had been a pity that last year’s programme had been interrupted by the infantile paralysis epidemic, and he hoped that in thp ensuing year the club would have a prosperous and active season. Mayor expressed a hope that the club would enjoy a really good season. Timaru was well supplied with three public swimming baths and two school baths. He mentioned that the Century Bath was the oldest in South Canterbury, having served the public for 37 years. H' outlined briefly the general idea of the Learn to , Swim Week and said he expected all the South Canterbury clubs to do their utmost to make this venture a success. Mr H. H. Frazer (representing the South Canterbury Swimming Centre) in wishing the South End Club every success, acknowledged the remarks made by the Mayor regarding the Learn to Swim Week, and stated that that week was being held mainly for adults who could not swim, and he sincerely hoped that everybody who could not swim would take advantage of the facilities provided during that period. Afternoon tea, provided by the ladies’ committee made a pleasant interlude in the afternoon’s event’. The results were:—
