AUSTRALIAN APPEAL TO NEW ZEALAND

Speaking at the annual conference of the Queensland Federation of Chambers of Commerce, the president (Mr George Groom) urged that the Premier (Mr Forgan Smith), who is now a world expert on sugar, should visit New Zealand and discuss with the Dominion Government whether there is any means by which New Zealand could alter its internal economy in order to permit the importation of Australian sugar on a much greater scale than at present. Mr Groom said that New Zealand’s purchases of sugar, representing upwards of £600,000 annually, came chiefly from foreign countries. Australia supplied only £7OOO worth. A quid pro quo arrangement by Australia, or a preferential trade agreement, he thought, would provide a solution to the problem-
