LIQUOR AT DANCES
WIDER POWERS FOR POLICE SUGGESTED
By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, October 5. A suggestion that the powers of the police should be widened in order to enable them to deal with the problem of liqtior at dances was made at the conference of the Otago district of the Women s Christian Temperance Union to-day. It is the intention of the Union to make a strong endeavour to enlist the support of local bodies for the suggestion in a hope that their influence might give greater weight to a petition to Parliament.
The suggestion, which was made by the delegate from the Mosgiel branch of the Union, was as follows: —“That local branches be asked to approach city and borough councils requesting their co-operation in petitioning Parliament to extend the powers of policemen, giving them the right to search suspected cars in the vicinity of dance halls, to confiscate all liquor found in cars, and also to arrest the occupants if the worse for liquor.” The delegates expressed their unanimous approval of the suggestion and promised to refer it to the branches they represented.
