CONTROL OF RADIO

To <ke Editor of " The Timaru Herald

Sir,—Apparently almost everyone agrees that the YA programmes are not what listeners want. Some weeks ago through the columns of “The Herald” the president of the Otago Listeners’ League urged that the Timaru Radio Club should make earnest endeavours to increase its membership with a view to forming a strong force whose ideas may carry some weight with the broadcasting authorities. The League’s idea was strongly supported by one of your correspondents, but your radio contributor has on several occasions more or less ridiculed the usefulness of such a movement. However the Radio Club was lately addressed on this subject by the secretary of the Otago Listeners’ League, who put up a great case, and urged increased club membership. According to a correspondent writing in "The Timaru Herald” on September 21, the club does not seek increased membership. As the Radio Club is strongly opposing a measure passed at a meeting recently convened by thsi body, it would appear that the club, as at present constituted, does not possess the confidence of South Canterbury radio listeners. It will be noted that, at its next meeting the club is to consider the Otago Listeners’ League’s suggestion to increase its membership, and it is to be earnestly hoped that it accepts the obvious with a good grace and gets busy on an organised drive—l am, etc., W. FRASER. Timaru, September 28.
