RETURN FROM LONG EXILE
GERMANS LEAVE INDIA IN RAGS SUCCESS IN SPITE OF DIFFICULTIES United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright (Received October 4, 5.5 p.m.) SPRINAGAR, October 3. Dr Filchner the German explorer who has emerged after being imprisoned in Khotan f or nine months has arrived in rags. He was dazed to learn that he had won 35,000 awarded to him from the German National prize fund. Dr Filchner was accompanied by Dr Haach whn-e life was in danger during their imprisonment. “Is there a war anywhere,” “how are my daughter-"" were Dr Filchner’s first questions. Last week a message from Delhi reported that Dr Filchener, the German explorer had sent a message from Leh, Kashmir, disclosing that he and his companion Dr Haack, had been imprisoned in Khotan for nine months. A British doctor saved Dr Haack’s life when he was seriously ill with pneumonia. Despite Khotan being in a state of continuous war, Dr Filchener saved his valuable documents by gluing them inside a leather case. He achieved, despite difficulties, the establishment of a chain of magnetic stations enabling complete maps of the districts from Lang-chow to Khotan to be made.
