With the conclusion of the New Education Fellowship Conference in Christchurch on Saturday there returned to the city a large number of students of the Teachers’ Training College, fresh from a week's holiday in their homes, away from town. The college had been closed to allow the students and staff to attend the fellowship lectures and hear about modern methods in education. “But why didn’t you go to the lectures?” a rather amazed reporter asked several of them. They replied: "We have examinations next week and we can’t afford to spend the time listening to a lot of high talk about education.” When this reached the ears of the leader of the conference, Mr L. Zilliacus, he said he did not blame the students. So long as they had examinations to pass they would have little time for education.
