HOUSING ACT SURVEY COMMENCED Mr W. H. Broad, who was appointed housing investigator under the provisions of the Housing Act by the Geraldine Borough Council at the monthly meeting last week, commenced his Investigations yesterday by inspecting houses in South Terrace. On Saturday Mr Broad gave notice to the householders concerned of his Intention to Inspect their dwellings, the Housing Act stipulating that 24 hours’ notice must be given before entry is made to the premises. Mr Broad proposes to inspect houses in the southern portion of the Borough first, gradually working his way to the northern end of the town. A complete survey will be made of the 300 houses in the Geraldine Borough, but the 60 residences at Raukapuka, which is within th'e Geraldine County, will net be Investigated as country areas are not Included in the provisions of the Housing Act.

The housing Investigator is required to fill in forms setting out the class of dwelling, construction materials, length of frontage and area of open spaces, physical condition, occupancy, weekly rental, food storage, sanitary domestic equipment, number of rooms, size of living rooms and bedrooms, lighting and ventilation. WATER SUPPLY FACILITIES AN INSPECTION MADE As a sequel to a report made by the Geraldine Borough Council by the Borough foreman (Mr G. E. Berry) and representations made by Superintendent C. C. Knight, of the Geraldine Volunteer Fir" Brigade, to the monthly meeting of the Council last week, Messrs A. J. Bell (chairman) and Z. O. Sherratt, representing the Water Committee, and Messrs Berry and Knight made an inspection of the water supply facilities with a view to improving the supply available for firefighting. Among other matters, the provision of a low-pressure supply by using the electric pump direct on the mains by cutting off the reservoir, the installation of special sumps from which the Brigade’s pumping engine could pump water to e required pressure, were discussed. The localities where it had been suggested the sumps should be constructed were inspected, and a report will be submitted to the next meeting of the Council. PERSONAL The Mayor, Mr B. R. Macdonald, left yesterday on a visit to Timaru. Misses Walker and Hart have returned from a visit to Dunedin. Miss V. Gilmore has returned from Christchurch. Miss Joan McKechnie has returned to Christchurch. Miss J. M. McWhmnle, who has been the guest of Mrs J. H. McWhinnle, has returned to Christchurch. Miss N. Nash (Christchurch), who was also Mrs McWhinnie’s guest, has returned north.

Misses E. King ani J. Kearton, who have been the guests of Mrs L. S. R. King, have returned to Christchurch.

Miss H. McCullough (Christchurch), who has been staying with Mrs J. W. McCullough, has returned north. Miss K. Maister. who has been the guest of Mrs H. G. Maister, has returned to Christchurch.

SCHOOL BENEFIT PICTURES Great men and the main events of the past thirty years live again on the screen In "Crown and Glory," a picture made from actual film records of British history, from Queen Victoria’s reign to the present day, which will be the main feature of the Geraldine D.H.S. benefit programme at the Municipal Theatre at 8 o’oclock this evening. The cavalcade of events commences with the coronation of Edward VII., shows the murder of Archduke Ferdinand at Serajeva, actual battle scenes in the Great War, and authentic film records of the Battle of Jutland. Concluding scenes Include King George’s silver jubilee, the rise of Hitler, the Abyssinian War, the abdication crisis and the accession of King George and Queen Elizabeth. The second feature, "Timothy’s Quest,” is a drama of an orphan enduring cruelty and hardship to bring love and happiness to his sister.

The Geraldine branches of the Hibernian and Children of Mary Societies will hold their annual dance in the Town Hall to-morrow night. The Orari Tennis Club, will hold a grand concert and dance in the Orari Coronation Hall on Thursday, July 22, at 8 p.m. The annual meeting of the Geraldine District Nurse Committee will be held in the Parish Guild room at 2.15 p.m. next Friday, July 23.
