PLEASANT POINT

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL MEETING OF COMMITTEE Mr H. Christie presided at the monthly meeting of the District High School Committee, which was attended by the following members: Mrs Taylor and Messrs W. Crawford, R. Esler, R. More, W. Halkett, and the headmaster, Mr S. C. Gibb. A motion of sympathy was extended to the relatives of the late Mr Murdoch McLeod.

The headmaster’s report stated: For the period ending July 12 the attendances have been: Primary roll 198, average 185; secondary roll 61, average 58.3. Two basketball teams and one football team from Temuka District High School played matches at Pleasant Point. The junior basketball match was drawn, while the remaining matches were won by Temuka by a small margin in each case. As Instructed roses and holly plants had been purchased.—Adopted. Miss Greenall wrote tendering her resignation in view of her approaching marriage. The following circular was received from the Education Board regarding Incidental allowance: Your committee’s allowance for the year ending March 31, 1938, based on 95 per cent of the average roll number during the period 7/9/36 to 2/10/36 is £lO3/15/-.

Mrs Taylor reported that spoutings around the school required attending to. The asphalt assembly court was breaking up badly and unless repairs were effected in the near future, the court would be useless. It was decided to write to the Board to ascertain if it would be possible to have the court attended to when the Public Works Department was working on the Pleasant Point-Cave road in the early spring. A deputation consisting of Messrs Robinson, France, Arras and Williams waited on the committee in regard to the Levels Valley, Waltawa, Pleasant Point bus service. Mr Robinson outlined the procedure in connection with the service and asked that the committee assist the deputation in having the present route extended so as to take in the families concerned. This would only mean an extra six miles a day, which was not unreasonable. Mr France endorsed the previous speaker's remarks, pointing out that were the roads dangerous for bus driving they would not ask for this concession, but all were good level roads. Mr Williams and Mr Arras spoke. Several questions were asked and, in reply to the chairman, Mr France said the extended route would not take in any new pupils, but if the present route was adhered to it would mean that some of them would have to go back to driving with no driving allowance.

Mr Christie assured the deputation that the committee would do all it could to assist to have the route extended.

Mr Christie was appointed visitor for the month. SUCCESSFUL DANCE The Town Hall was beautifully decorated on Thursday with streamers and greenery, the occasion being the annual birthday dance of the Pleasant Point Women’s Institute. Visitors were present from many different Institutes. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Mr and Mrs Beattie (Hilton) and a statue waltz by Mr and Mrs Black (Glen-ltl). Extras were played by Mrs Quinn and Misses Davidson and Teahen. Prizes for the euchre were won by Mrs Teahen and Mr G. Smith. PERSONAL Miss Jean Halstead, who has been on a holiday visit to Wellington and Christchurch, has returned home. Miss Doris Murphy, "Beaufort,’’ is spending a holiday in Wellington.
