“WALLABY SHOOTING”

SPORT FOR SPRINGBOKS An ironic suggestion that, during the week which they are in Tiinaru before the second test, the Springboks be taken to Waimate “wallaby shooting,” was made by Mr D. M. Webster when the entertainment of the South Africans was being discussed at a meeting of the Management Committee last night. One of the main attractions on the Rugby Union’s programme will be a dance on the night of the match and, according to a decision reached last night, the committee will organise the function itself. In addition to the Union, the Zingari and Star Clubs also applied to the Botough Council for the use of the Bay Hall on that night, and the Council, realising that the entertainment of the Springboks was the Union’s duty, allotted the building to it.

Last night a deputation from the i Zingari Club, comprising Messrs A. Stevenson, N. Dore and J. Howey, ; waited on the Management Committee, 1 suggesting that they might be allowed to assist to organise the dance. Mr Stevenson pointed out that the Zingari Club had intended to hold its annual dance on the night of the Springbko match, and had relied on it to augment its funds. He suggested that the committee would be very busy that week entertaining the visiting team and the club might be allowed to run the dance on the committee’s behalf. It would still be a Rugby. Union dance, but the Zingari Club would undertake the organisation and, if the Union thought fit, could be given a percentage of the profit, if any. After the deputation had retired, the chairman (Mr J. H. Harley) said that if the Union ran the dance it could not give away any of the proceeds. Mr C. L. Cutler estimated that the dance could be made to yield a profit of £5O.

It was decided to thank the Zingari Club for its offer of assistance, but to advise them that it was unable to accept it.
