MINE DISASTER
GROSS CARELESSNESS ALLEGED United Press Association —Bv Elects* Tel egra ph Con w i e h t LONDON, July 15. A brick placed to hold open the doors, hindering the cleavers, is declared to have been one of the preliminary causes of the Whamcliffe explosion on August 11. Sir Henry Walker, in an official report on the disaster, criticises the discipline of the night shift, giving as an example the propping open of the ventilation doors. “These acts of indiscipline reflect upon the management.” Sir Henry Walker is of the opinion that the explosion extended because of dampness causing the limestone dust to bind.
