BASKETBALL

SATURDAY’S GAMES On Saturday three teams from Temuka journeyed to Timaru and played most enjoyable games in all three grades with the local teams. In the B grade, Timaru was definitely superior, as the defenders were much too strong for the Temuka forwards, and only allowed them to score three goals. The Timaru team as a whole combined very well and had the country team some idea of positional play the score would have been much different. The Temuka defenders frustrated the Timaru forwards many times and thus prevented a bigger score. The half-time score was 8-1 in favour of Timaru end during the second half most of the play was in the centre third and Timaru forward third. The final score was 19-3 in favour of Timaru.

The third grade game was the most even of the day, and through the superior play of the Temuka centres and forwards they scored a win for their Sub-Association l.y one goal. The half-time score was 4-3 in favour of Temuka. The Timaru forwards did not seem to combine well, and they were inclined to run back from the ball instead of coming forward to bring it back. This team should improve very much with more practice. There was very little between the teams during the second half, and Temuka ran out winners after a very close and exciting game by 10 goals to 9. Brilliant passing by the Timaru team was the outstanding feature of the representative game against Temuka on. Saturday. S. Christie, who has been on the sick list for the major part of the season, revealed some of her old form and held together the Temuka forwards. They were, however, at a disadvantage against the taller Timaru defenders, and were unfortunate in their shooting throughout the game. In the centre,. J. MacDonald played her characteristically spectacular and steady game, and received strong support from M. Best. There was little to choose between the two teams, the most even part of the game being played In the centre, S. Chisholm and I. McPherson being brilliant at times. Probably the most spectacular game was played by the Timaru forwards, whose South Canterbury representative experience stood them in good stead. D. Strachan’s valuable third work, combined with M. Browne’s almost faultless shooting, put Timaru well in the lead to win by 23 goals to 14. The Temuka defenders were caught out of position very often by the Timaru forwards, whose lightning passing left them practically free throws at the goal. The three Timaru defenders were at their best except for some good interceptions by S. Christie at critical moments during the game.

Second Grade West End 7, Thomson’s 5. St. Patrick’s L 10, Fairview 6. Third Grade High School Old Girls 19„ West End 14. St. Patrick’s B 20, St. Patrick's A 8.
