WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

FAIRVIEW Tire July meeting of the Fairview \ mien’s Institute was held on Wednesday, the president, Mrs Kelland, presiding over a record attendance of members. Miss C. Godfry was welcomed as a new member, also visitors from Pleasant Point, and St. Andrew's. During the afternoon, a round table c nference, on suggestion’s for the Institute birthday party was held. Invitations to the Arowhenua, Gleniti and Tycho birthday parties were received, and excepted. Owing to bad weather at the two previous meetings, opportunity was taken to plant two coronation trees. The hostesses for the afternoon were: Mesdames T. Butchers, S. Buchanan, W. Butchers and I. Mitchell. The competitions resulted as follows: Premier bloom: Miss Mercer 1, Mrs T. Butchers 2, Mrs Buchanan and Mrs Vincent 3. Wood fibre flower: Miss R. Butchers 1, Mrs W. Butchers 2, Miss M. Kelland 3. Scones: Mrs F. E. Smith 1, Mrs Buchanan 2, Mrs Vincent 3. Carrots: Mrs Vincent 1, Miss R. Butchers 2, Mrs T. Butchers 3. SHERWOOD DOWNS At the sixth birthday meeting of the Sherwood Downs Women’s Institute held on Tuesday, Mrs M. B. Reid presided over a very good attendance of members and visitors from Palmerston South, Fairlie, Allandale and Ashwick Flat. Greetings and apologies for absence were received from several Institutes. The golden thread talk on famous women, was given by Miss Cuthbertson, her subject, Mother Aubert, proving a very interesting one. The Sherwood rustic band then gave several numbers. This was the first appearance of the housewives or percussion band and it provided much pleasure and amusement. Mrs West as voluntary organiser spoke on Institute affairs. This was followed by a talk on libraries which Mrs West has lately visited Mrs Cuthbertson proposed a very hearty vote cf thanks for her instructive and interesting talk. Afternoon tea was provided by all

members and was followed by the cutting of the birthday cake. Mrs Cuthbertson lit the six candles and Mrs Crighton blew them out. Mrs West, who organised the Sherwood Downs Women’s Institute, cut the cake and birthday greteings were extended by representatives of the different Institutes and Women’s Division who were present. Mrs Reid thanked Mrs Carter for making the cake and Mrs Gray for icing it. Prizes for the competitions held during the year were presented as follows: Most points, Mrs Anniss 1, Mrs Mackenzie 2. Most entries: Miss Cuthbertson 2. Most entries, Miss Cuthbertson. Bloom competitions, Mrs Ross. The appeal for discarded clothing for relief purposes, resulted in a good collection of useful articles.
