The following list of steamers’ movements is compiled in accordance with advices supplied by agents for the different Lines:— EXPECTED ARRIVALS

NOTES The Breeze should be here to-morrow from the south to load for Wellington and Wanganui. The Holmdale, on the Wellington, Picton and Wanganui run, is due tomorrow from Oamaru. It is expected that the Waimarino will be here to-morrow from the south. She is to load for Wellington and Auckland. The Kauri is listed to arrive on Wednesday to load for Greymouth. The Wainui, on the Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne run, is due on Wednesday from Oamaru. London’s Shipping During the week ended May 28, 1,367 vessels representing 1,088,871 net register tons, used the Port of London. Of these 534 vessels (828,098 net register tons) were to and from Empire and foreign ports and 833 vessels (260,773 net register tons) were engaged in coastwise traffic. The arrivals included five meat cargoes—viz., three from Australia and two from New Zealand, comprising 186.000 carcases of lamb and mutton, 15,000 packages of beef, quantities of pork, rabbits, and sundries. Economy Ship Statira The Chellew Steam Navigation Company’s new economy motor ship Statira, under charter to Andrew Weir’s Bank Line, which arrived at Port Adelaide from Ocean Island via Port Lincoln, with phosphate rock recently, is one of a line of ships which was founded in the little Cornish seaport of Truro, where, in the old sailing ship days, the Chellew family formed a company in which many of the local fishermen and farmers held shares. The last of the Ohellews died amout two years ago, and the Statira and the rest of ttye fleet, including the economy steamers Auretta and Justitia, are now managed by the Chellew Steamship Management Company, of London. The Statira has made an interesting maiden voyage. From Sunderland she went to Spain, where she loaded copper ore for Baltimore at Huelva just before that port was involved actively in the civil war. Her cargo discharged at Baltimore, the motor ship loaded 9,000 tons of scrapped motor cars for Japan. This strange cargo was landed at Yawatu, from where the Statira sailed light-ship for Ocean Island, where she loaded her present cargo of phosphates. She has a three-cylinder opposedpiston motor, built by William Doxford. This type of motor has been the subject of numerous experiments since 1921, and it has reached such a stage of perfection that the Sunderland yards are booked with orders for these economy ships until 1940. The Statira will do 102 knots on a daily fuel consumption of 6} tons of oil, compared with a daily consumption of between 10 and -15 tons for an ordinary motor ship of the same size. The company built the Justita and Auretta as coal economy ships and the Statira as an economy motor ship to try to determine the mast satisfactory type for future orders. As a result, particular interest is being taken in the performance of the Statira during her maiden voyage. An addi-

tional saving is represented by the fact that only seven enginers are required, with no greasers. FERRY STEAMER LATE By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, July 17. The Rangatira was 21 hours late arriving from Wellington to-day, having experienced the roughest trip yet. The fury of the gale and the high seas reduced speed to 81 knots. The vessel carried 411 passengers, and in Cook Strait shipped two big seas, but sustained no damage. The seas flooded the captain's quarters in the boat deck.
