IRRIGATION WORK PROCEEDS GOOD PROGRESS ON NEW AREA In spite of several short periods of wet weather since a start was made, work on the additional irrigation area between the Point-Arowhenua road and the Opihi river has not been interrupted. Good progress has been made on the earthwork in the fortnight since construction started. Twenty-four men are engaged on the race formation and the building of one or two small structures on the race. The new era to be served will be about 1000 acres, and the work will take another si weeks to complete. LAMB MORTALITY TREATMENT FOR PULPY KIDNEY Because of the prevalence of pulpy kidney In lambs throughout the sheepraising areas of the Temuka district, considerable interest has been taken by farmers In the recent discovery of a preventative with which ewes may be inoculated before the lambs are born. A recent meeting of the Farmers’ Union passed a resolution expressing pleasure at the discovery, which culminated some years of research and experiments, and at the time members stated that the treatment would be appreciated but that farmers would need to learn the method of administration. Arrangements have now been made for Mr G. Lukey, the Government veterinarian at Timarti, to give a demonstration to all interested farmers at the Temuka saleyards next Tuesday. MISSIONARY ADDRESS An interesting address on Presbyterian Maori Missions, of the work they do and of their history, was delivered in the Presbyterian Bible Class Hall on Thursday evening by the Rev. J. G. Laughton, of Taupo, who is touring the Dominion speaking on this subject. Mr Laughton is the superintendent of Maori Missions in New Zealand. At the conclusion of his address the Rev. W. F. Nichol, who presided, thanked the speaker for his interesting talk. GENERAL NEWS The number of men placed in work at the Temuka Placement Office was three less than the figures for the previous week. Two men received permanent work, while there was one casual and one temporary placement. The latter two were engaged in gorse cutting. AROWHENUA INSTITUTE In the report published on Thursday last the following who contributed to the success of the first half of the programme were omitted: Action songs and poi dances, W.I. members; hakas, junior and senior men’s teams; solos, Mrs M. Manning, Miss M. Paiki, Messrs Ketl, Rehu and Shrimpton. “THE DEVIL DOLL” Familiar and beloved though he is to patrons of the screen, Lionel Barrymore is recognisable only by his inimitable artistry, in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s "The Devil Doll,” which opens to-night at the Elite Theatre. Barrymore Impersonates an ancient woman. In wig and skirts and petticoats, the veteran master of characterisation achieves something that he has never attempted before. His change from the heavy-browed, shaggy-haired man he is, to the character of a benign old woman is a miracle of the screen. The story concerns the career of a halfmad scientist who conceives a formula that reduces animals and human beings to a sixth of their natural size, but leaves them hopeless morons, subject to the will of their Insane master. Frank Lawton, playing the romantic lead opposite Maureen O'Sullivan, combines with her to weave an adventurous love element In the strange story of a human revenge that is made more terrible by its affiliation with the secrets of science. Ken Maynard’s first outdoor starring picture for Columbia, “Western Frontier,” will be shown at the matinee. It is a grim tale of cattle-rustling in the old West.
