GERALDINE

DRAINING THE OVAL PLAN PREPARED In connection with the proposal to drain the Domain Oval, the Borough foreman (Mr G. E. Berry) outlined a comprehensive scheme and presented a plan to the monthly meeting of the Geraldine Domain Board on Wednesday evening. Mr Berry’s plan provided for three main drains with ample lateral drains, the total length of piping amounting to 8,300 ft. He estimated that the work, which would cost £2lO, would occupy 40 men for three months. Mr E. B. D. Logan remarked that, although the Geraldine Sports Association hoped to raise the necessary funds by means of the forthcoming carnival, responsible persons would have to be found as guarantors before the work was undertaken. Mr Z. O. Sherratt objected to the publication of the cost of the scheme before the plan was brought before the Snorts Association. The members of the Board were of the opinion that there was no reason why the total cost should not be published. It was agreed that the Borough foreman should explain the scheme at a meeting of the Sports Association. Mr A. M. Fyfe (president) and J. H. Lewis (auditor) and Rev. Father M. J. Fogarty, who wrote on behalf of the Geraldine Amateur Athletic Club, asked the Board to reconsider its decision to remove the present asphalt track at the Domain. They had a promising club in Geraldine and were looking forward to putting on amateur cycling events this coming season. Even as a stand for spectators the track had a value. Fairlie and Pleasant Point had added interest in their districts through cycling events in their programme, an' l , the writers felt that a similar result would obtain at Geraldine. They in no way questioned the sincerity of Board members in their efforts to improve the Domain, but stated that, in their opinion, if the track were left it would help them in their endeavours to help the young people of the town and district to improve their outlook, as they had noticed that young athletes competing and representing their club were very much improved individuals. The letter was received. RIFLE SHOOTING The following scores were registered at the weekly shoot of the Gapes Valley Miniature Rifle Club:— E. Patrick 79, H. Walker 78, J. Waller 77, E. Barker 77, A.
